About These Stones
These are among the most colorful and visually striking stones in our collection. Based on their appearance — rich opaque reds, burnt oranges, and warm brick tones with a matte, waxy surface — many of these stones are likely jasper, a microcrystalline form of quartz whose vivid colors come from iron oxide and other mineral impurities locked deep within the silica. Several stones also appear to show chert or chalcedony — closely related silica minerals in cooler grey and cream tones.
The vivid teal and green flecks visible on several stones are one of the most distinctive features of this collection. These are likely epidote or chlorite — minerals commonly found in metamorphic and igneous rocks of coastal New England — and they create a striking contrast against the warm iron-rich host rock.
Some stones show dramatic white quartz veins cutting through the red and orange matrix in flowing, irregular lines — each one looking almost hand-painted.
Please note: we are collectors, not geologists. Beach stone identification from appearance alone is an inexact science, and what we describe here is our best observation — not a certified mineral analysis. What we can say with certainty is that every stone is wholly natural, unpolished, untreated, and hand-collected from the shores of Plymouth, Massachusetts.
