Oceanus

Oceanus Hopkins was born somewhere on the open Atlantic in the autumn of 1620 — the only child known, or recorded to have been born aboard the Mayflower. His parents, Elizabeth and Stephen Hopkins, were traveling with their daughter, Damaris and two of Stephen's children from a previous marriage.

From the comfort and warmth of his mother's womb, Oceanus would enter into a cold, wet, windy, stinky, crowded space full of sick & dying people.  

 "Behold, I show you a mystery: We shall not all sleep; but we shall all be changed."

Oceanus survived the brutal first winter at Plymouth Colony— the winter that took nearly half the colony. He lived long enough to walk along the shore his mother  and father courageously risked their lives (and his) to reach.  He died in 1627, just 7 years young.

 For the ones who came and went too soon — and for those who loved them.

The Stones

This set includes three stones, hand-collected from the shores of Plymouth, Massachusetts — the same shores Oceanus Hopkins' family first stepped onto in the winter of 1620.

What you'll find in your set:

• A swirling grey-green, white, and rust stone — most likely a chlorite schist or greenschist, a metamorphic rock formed under intense heat and pressure deep within the earth. Or possibly an Ocean Jasper — a rare orbicular stone native to the remote coastal cliffs of Madagascar. Known for its swirling patterns of green, white, and rust, carried by ocean currents across the Atlantic over thousands of years, and by glaciers that once reshaped the coastline. It is not impossible that one found its way here. The white zones are quartz that crystallized in ancient fractures; the rust and orange staining is iron oxide. 
• Dense, dark grey-green stones — likely basalt or fine-grained greywacke, the quiet bedrock of the New England shore. Solid. Smooth. Shaped by centuries of wave action.

None of these stones have been tumbled, dyed, or treated.
