Mary & Martha

"Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed — or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

When Jesus and his disciples came through town, it was Martha who opened the door. Martha who welcomed them in. Martha who immediately set about making sure everything was right — the food, the preparations, the details that a good host never lets slip.

Her sister Mary did something different. She sat down at Jesus’ feet and listened.

Martha kept moving. And somewhere between the kitchen and the worry, the frustration built — until she finally said it out loud: “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work alone? Tell her to help me!”

Jesus answered her gently. “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things — but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

It wasn’t a rebuke of doing. Martha’s love was real. Her hospitality was a gift. But in her rushing, she missed the moment that was right in front of her.

Mary didn’t.

Martha is the friend who is already three steps ahead. She remembered your birthday, researched your symptoms before you even finished describing them, and showed up with food before you thought to ask. She loves through action — through doing, fixing, preparing. She carries the mental load so no one else has to. She means well. She always means well. Mary is the calming force. She puts the phone down. She looks you in the eye. She doesn’t try to fix the hard thing — she just sits with you in it. Being with her feels like exhaling. She’s not thinking about what’s next. She’s just here, and you feel it.

Martha without Mary loses the moment — so busy taking care of everything that she forgets to just be with the people she loves. Mary without Martha might let the beautiful moment happen in a messy house with nothing to eat. One brings presence. The other brings provision. Together, they make something whole.

Most of us are both, depending on the day. But every Martha has a Mary — and every Mary has a Martha. The one who balances you out. The one who is everything you’re not, and exactly what you need.

Hand-selected from the shores of Plymouth, Massachusetts — shaped by tide and time, carried here by the Creator’s hand. Warm cream, blush pink, soft peach, and rose — threaded with crimson and burgundy veining that runs deep. 

• Creamy white to blush with red veining — likely quartz-veined felsite or granite, where iron-rich fluids moved through natural fractures and left vivid crimson threads. Complex, layered — always moving, even in stillness.
• Warm peachy-salmon — likely feldspar-rich granite or granodiorite, worn smooth, with a quiet warmth that feels like something held close for a long time.
• Cream with dark purple-black patches — likely granite with hornblende or biotite clusters, where shadow and light sit side by side. The chaos and the calm, in a single stone.
