"The soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David." — 1 Samuel 18:1

Jonathan didn’t have to choose David. He was the crown prince. The heir. The one the kingdom was built for. And yet the moment he met David, something shifted — and Jonathan made a choice that would cost him everything. He chose him over his own future. Over his father’s rage. Over the throne that should have been his.

He stripped off his robe, his armor, his sword, and gave them to David — a shepherd from Bethlehem, newly risen from the valley where Goliath fell. It was the most radical act of friendship in all of Scripture. 

And what came was exile, betrayal, and war. Jonathan stood between his father’s spear and David’s life more than once. He warned him. He wept with him. He made a covenant that outlasted his own death — because David kept it, honoring Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth long after Jonathan was gone.

These two Plymouth stones are cut from the same ancient cloth — deep blue-green, charcoal-banded, threaded with plum veins and the quiet weight of something that has endured. They are not opposites. They are kindred. Chosen for each other before either of them knew it.

About These Stones

Hand-selected from the shores of Plymouth, Massachusetts — shaped by tide and time, carried here by the Creator’s hand. These are among the most visually striking stones on any New England shore: deep olive to blue-green, with bold flowing bands of charcoal, plum veining, and rust threading throughout. Smooth and substantial in the hand.

What they are exactly is part of their mystery — and we’d rather be honest than overconfident:

• Likely serpentinite — formed when ancient oceanic rock is transformed by heat and water deep in the earth. The deep olive-green to blue-green color, the waxy surface sheen, and the white veining cutting across the face are all hallmarks of serpentinite. New England has it along old suture zones where ocean floor was pushed up onto the continent by the Creator’s hand.
• Possibly chlorite schist — a metamorphic rock compressed under enormous pressure until its minerals align in flowing parallel bands. The strong foliation — that visible grain and direction running through the stone like wood — is characteristic of schist, and these stones have it clearly.
• The white vein cutting across the face is almost certainly quartz or chrysotile — injected into a fracture in the rock and preserved there. A seam of something different, running straight through.
• The rust-orange hairlines along the mineral planes — iron oxide, bleeding through the foliation the way it always does. Time made visible.

Whatever the precise name, these are rare, beautiful, and completely unlike anything else on the shore. The kind of stone most people walk past without realizing what they’re looking at.
