That is how her son, President John Quincy Adams, mourned Abigail Adams upon her death — quoting Proverbs 31, the Woman of Valor. He could not have chosen more fitting words.
Born in 1744 in Weymouth, Massachusetts, the daughter of a Congregational minister, Abigail never received a formal education. But she was steeped in Scripture from childhood, and the Bible became the lens through which she saw everything — marriage, motherhood, revolution, and nation-building.
While John was in Philadelphia, Paris, and London changing the world, Abigail was in Braintree, Massachusetts — raising their children, managing the farm, and writing him letters that would become some of the most extraordinary correspondence in American history. She quoted Amos and the Psalms to steady him before the Continental Congress. She invoked Nehemiah after Bunker Hill. When cannon fire kept her from sleeping, she wrote: “That we rest under the shadow of the Almighty is the consolation to which I resort, and find that comfort which the world cannot give.”
She was his rock and he hers.
John and Abigail Adams are buried side by side at United First Parish Church in Quincy, Massachusetts — roughly 30 miles from the shores of America’s Hometown, Plymouth, Massachusetts, where these stones were found.
